USPS Shape Based Pricing Overview
Business mailers will see the greatest impact. They will have to make significant changes to the way they process their mail. Proposed changes will take factors such as piece weight, size, and shape into account for classification and rate status.
Changing from Flats to Letter sized pieces - Often a 9x12 flat is the envelope of choice due to the number of pages being sent. 6-8 pages tri-folded into a #10 envelope is not something most people want to try. Consider half-folding those sheets and inserting them into a 6x9 envelope to bring this into the letter size classification.
Repackage Parcels into Flats - Shape Based Pricing has proposed that the cost of a 1 oz parcel will nearly DOUBLE. By repackaging into a flat sized envelope (up to ¾” thick) customers can realize big savings by their mailings.
Machineable vs. Non-Machineable - Mail Piece design has many factors, some of which are weight and structure of the mail piece. By changing the look and feel of a mail piece we may be able to go from costly Non-Machineable mail to less expensive Machineable mail. Try duplex printing to reduce the number of pages and therefore the weight of the piece (keep it under 3.5 oz). Or maybe a wafer seal on your newsletters or catalogs.
Presort Savings - The proposed rate plan from the USPS has the First-Class Mail presort rate just 1 cent higher than our current single-piece rate. In its most basic terms, “presorting” means that you are organizing your mail by grouping groups of zip codes. This is an easy way for customers to realize a quick savings, up to 5%.
Automation Savings - For customers who want to save more, up to 25%, automation rates are the way to go. The work you have done “presorting” your mail was the hard part. Automation rates require you to print a DPV (delivery point barcode) on each piece. This can be made very simple by using software.
